WinGD short-stroke engine gains type approval
WinGD’s new X52-S2.0 engine has successfully completed type approval and factory acceptance tests, expanding the Swiss engine company’s X-S engine series.
The approved engine is a compact, medium-bore, two-stroke unit suitable for shallow-draft vessels or those with small propellers. They include container feeders, RoRo’s, vehicle carriers, and multi-purpose vessels.
The testing follows a similar exercise relating to the larger bore X62-S2.0 completed earlier this year. The new engines follow on from the RT-flex50 and RT-flex58 engines and the company has already confirmed orders for diesel, LNG, and methanol units. An ammonia option is under development.
The new engine series is significantly more economical than its predecessors, WinGD said. The X52-S2.0 consumes about 10g/kWh less than equivalent RT-flex engines, a saving of about 4% depending on operating profile.
WinGD carried out the type approval and factory acceptance testing at Yuchai Marine Power Co in China.
