A new engine range comprising short-stroke conventional and dual-fuel units has been unveiled by Winterthur Gas & Diesel Ltd (WinGD). The new engines, with a short piston stroke, are well-suited to ships including container feeders, RoRo and ConRo units, multipurpose cargo ships and vehicle carriers for which engine room dimensions are often a constraint.

The X62-S2.0 and X52-S2.0 are conventional liquid-fuel engine types, available with five to eight cylinders in power ranges from 7,600 kW to 21,480 kW and 5,425 kW to 15,280 kW respectively. The engines will incorporate an integrated selective catalytic reduction system ensuring IMO Tier III compliance. The dual-fuel versions – the X62DF-S1.0 and the X52DF-S1.0 – will have power ranges from 6,925 kW to 16,880 kW and 4,950 kW to 12,000 kW respectively.

Volkmar Galke, WinGD’s global director of Sales, commented: “Our new short-stroke engine series offers a tailored solution for smaller vessels that still require the efficiency and power of two-stroke marine engines. Many of these vessel types are part of an ageing fleet that means we expect significant fleet renewal over the next few years.” Tests on the first new engine, a six-cylinder version of the X62-S2.0 type, are due to be carried out at the end of 2021, with the first X52-S2.0 engine tested six months later.
