Technology group Wärtsilä has achieved a significant breakthrough with type approval awarded by the China Classification Society (CCS) for its exhaust gas cleaning system. The approval has come after the system was ordered by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry for installation on a VLCC, New Treasure, currently under construction for China Merchants Energy Shipping group company, Associated Maritime of Hong Kong.

Full-scale testing was carried out after the system was installed on the VLCC, and the resulting data was then reviewed independently by Dalian Maritime University. This process involved a design review and an appraisal of the scrubber tower construction to check that it met all CCS class and quality requirements.

Jan Othman, Wärtsilä Marine’s director, Exhaust Treatment, commented: “Having CCS type approval now means that this product can be installed on any CCS class ship without the need for further emissions testing. This is a success story that clearly endorses the efficiency and quality of our exhaust gas cleaning systems.”
