Volvo unveils electric-only propulsion system

Volvo Penta’s hybrid IPS propulsion system will enable zero emissions operation for marine vessels

Volvo Penta has revealed an electric-only hybrid option for its Inboard Performance System (IPS) propulsion system.

This will allow vessels to operate efficiently in new low- and zero-emission areas that are likely to be introduced in the future. The electric-only option will not only enable access to such zones, but it will also improve boat handling characteristics and raise comfort standards on board.
The new hybrid arrangement incorporates a clutch and electric motor between the engine and the IPS pod. The motor is powered by lithium-ion batteries that can be charged externally or by using the main diesel engine. When the clutch is opened, the vessel runs in electric-only mode; with the clutch closed, the propulsion system combines diesel and electric power at the same time.
Modular battery packs make the hybrid set-up scalable for both leisure and commercial craft and Volvo Penta will support customers in tailoring a propeller-to-helm configuration best suited to their requirements.
This latest development follows an earlier announcement that Volvo Penta will provide electrified power systems for both land and sea by 2021.
