Sweden’s Volvo Penta is to supply engines for three hybrid and hybrid-ready ferries under construction at Norwegian boat yard GS Marine Production AS. The engine company is working in collaboration with Norwegian propulsion, positioning and manoeuvring company, Brunvoll.

Two Volvo Penta D13-700 Tier III engines, integrated with a Brunvoll hybrid control system, will provide the propulsion set-up for a 20-knot ferry currently under construction for Faroe Island operator, Strandfaraskip Landsins. The ferry will be capable of operating on its diesel engines, on electricity or in hybrid mode. The engines will also serve as generators.

Meanwhile, GS Marine delivered the first of two hybrid and hybrid-ready ferries to Norwegian operator, Norled AS. The Fjordled was delivered earlier this year and the second ferry, Fjordöy, is due to be commissioned any time now.
