The 130m-long ice-strengthened ships will replace the existing Nordkapp-class vessels and will be suited to worldwide operations in all weather and sea conditions. They will be built not only for inshore operations but will also have ocean-going capabilities for tasks including long-distance transits, search-and-rescue operations, surveillance and oil recovery.
The Fincantieri subsidiary said it will build the vessels within its existing production network, with deliveries scheduled from Vard Langsten in Norway in the first quarter of 2022, 2023 and 2024, respectively. The effectiveness of the contract is subject to certain conditions being lifted.

Vard Holdings Ltd has won a contract with the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA), which is directly subordinate to the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Defence, for the construction of three coast guard vessels worth about EUR 550 million.
