Following its recent spin-off from thyssenkrupp AG, naval shipbuilder TKMS has celebrated the naming of the second Tamandaré-class frigate at the thyssenkrupp Estaleiro Brasil Sul shipyard in Itajai, Brazil. The ship’s sponsor was Lu Alckmin, wife of Brazil’s vice president, Geraldo Alckmin.
The vessel, named F201 – Jerônimo de Albuquerque, is the second of four frigates ordered in 2020 for about EUR 2 billion. The four-ship programme is designed to modernise and strengthen the Brazilian Navy’s operational capabilities with high-tech ships incorporating local components.
The 107m-long frigate has a displacement of 3,500 tons and a maximum speed of 25 knots. Its combat management system, developed by Atech (Brazil) together with thyssenkrupp group company, Atlas Elektronik, integrates sensor and weapon systems, providing an effective response to various types of threats, the company said.
TKMS chief executive officer, Oliver Burkhard, commented: “Our commitment in Brazil goes far
beyond the delivery of ships. TKMS invests continuously and strategically in strengthening the local defence industry, technology transfer, and training qualified personnel, thereby contributing to the country's national sovereignty and socioeconomic development. We are proud of the progress of the programme and grateful for the close partnership with the Brazilian Navy and Emgepron.”
The first frigate in the four-ship series is due to undertake sea trials within the next few weeks.
