Thecla Bodewes has delivered a short-sea multi-purpose vessel, the 5,050dwt Iana, to Van Dam Shipping. The first ship in the Salmo class has a diesel-electric propulsion system comprising three generator sets of 532 bkW each and two electric motors of 600 ekW.

The modular design developed by the Dutch shipbuilder covers a size range rom 4,500dwt to 6,500dwt and exceeds IMO EEDI Phase 3 benchmarks by more than 32%. The design has also been developed with future fuels in mind, including methanol and hydrogen, ensuring compliance with future regulations and providing long-term operational flexibility.

The 87.3m-long, 2,999gt Iana has a cubic capacity of 5,900m3. Its hull is optimised for diesel-electric propulsion, combining high cargo efficiency with low operating costs.

Van Dam director, Jan van Dam, acting as owner’s representative, commented: “The addition of Iana to our fleet underscores our commitment to sustainable shipping solutions. Designed and built in the Netherlands by the talented team at Thecla Bodewes Shipyards, this vessel reflects our vision for innovation, Dutch quality, collaboration, and environmental responsibility. We are thrilled to offer our clients this state-of-the-art vessel that sets a benchmark for the future of short-sea shipping."

Thecla Bodewes, the shipyard’s CEO, said: “The delivery of  Iana is a proud moment for our team. This vessel is a testament to our focus on forward-thinking, environmentally friendly design and our dedication to supporting the maritime industry's transition to sustainable practices.”

The vessel is to be deployed in short-sea services operated by Netherlands-based short-sea specialist, Transtal Shipping BV.
