Thai navy orders STC engines for offshore patrol vessel

MAN V28/33D STC engine, here in its 20-cylinder version
The 90m vessel, an improved River-class design, will be constructed at the Mahidol Adulyadej naval dockyard in Sattahip, Thailand.
Locally called OPV No. 2, the order follows that of OPV No. 1, the HTMS Krabi, a similar vessel featuring two 16V28/33D engines that was ordered in 2009.
Olivier Condemine, MAN Diesel & Turbo's senior naval and governmental sales manager, commented: “Sequential turbocharging improves the already proven performance and fuel efficiency of the 28/33D engine, especially at intermediate- and low-load operations – known as silent running – which is very important for this kind of vessel.”
The 28/33D STC range offers twelve-, 16- and 20-cylinder configurations covering power requirements from 5,000 to 10,000 kW per unit. According to MAN Diesel & Turbo, the 28/33D STC is the most powerful engine in its class and proven in service, featuring a high power-to-weight ratio, "best-in-class" SFOC (specific fuel oil consumption), low maintenance costs due to long service intervals and onboard maintenance, a robust design for high availability, continuous low-load operation capability and high torque for fast acceleration.
What's more, the engine is compliant with IMO Tier II and EPA Tier 2 (Tier III with selective catalytic reduction) requirements, the manufacturer said.
