Bonn-headquartered TGE Marine, a specialist in liquid gas cargo systems, has won an order from Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Offshore Co. Ltd. (DSOC) for the design and supply of the cargo handling system for a 7,500m3 liquid carbon dioxide (LCO2) carrier.

The vessel, being built for an unnamed owner, is the third iteration of a series of vessels in which TGE Marine has been involved for the Norwegian consortium, Northern Lights JV. The ships are part of the 'Longship Project', a Norwegian state initiative to decarbonise large emitters. Captured carbon dioxide is reliquefied ashore and then shipped out to the Norwegian continental shelf, where it is pressed underground at a terminal just outside Bergen.

The vessel owner, DSOC, and TGE Marine have worked closely on the vessel design, focusing on the need for efficient operation in the cold waters of the North Atlantic. The ship will have two cylindrical type-C tanks with capacity for up to 7,500m3 of liquid carbon dioxide. Fuelled by LNG, it will be fitted with a shore electricity connection, enabling it to hook up to green electricity during loading and discharging operations.

Florian Krauß, TGE Marine's proposal manager, commented: "Thanks to an outstanding cooperation with the shipyard as well as the owner, we were able to design a vessel that will be able to perform excellently under the conditions that it is going to face. We are proud to be a part of a project that is unprecedented and will be an example to many similar projects that will be needed to reach net-zero and beyond."

TGE Marine is a front-runner in liquefied gas cargo systems, with expertise in gases including LNG, ethylene, LPG, ammonia, and carbon dioxide. The company has experience in cargo and fuel gas tanks for vessels, including gas carriers, bunker ships, FPSOs, and FSRUs.
