Tersan to build new ferries with zero-emission technology

The ferries, designed by Norway-based Multi Maritime, will carry 120 cars, 12 trailers and 349 passengers. The two vessels are expected to start operating from January 1, 2018, on the Anda-Lote route in Norway. “This will be the first ferry connection in Norway where the Road Administration requires use of zero-emission technology,” Fjord1 said. “The new ferries are an important step towards more environmental-friendly public transportation.” Charging of batteries is made through fully automatic stations at the quayside. Battery capacity will be sufficient to continue operations for several hours without charging, such as during maintenance on the power grid or at the charging stations, Fjord1 said. In addition, the ferries will also be equipped with biodiesel generators, which enable potential operation as plug-in hybrids on other fjord crossings in the future.

Norwegian ferry operator Fjord1 has signed a final contract with Turkey’s Tersan Shipyard for two battery-powered ferries that will be fully electrically powered.
