Terntank orders wind-/methanol-ready hybrid tankers

Delivery of eco-friendly tankers is scheduled for spring 2025 (Source: Terntank)

Danish shipping company Terntank has ordered two 15,000dwt chemical/product/biofuels tankers with environment-friendly propulsion from Chinese yard China Merchants Jinling. The order includes options for two repeat vessels.

The vessels will have propulsion adaptable for marine gas oil, biofuel and methanol. The vessels will also have readiness to use wind-assisted propulsion. The newbuildings are designed by Kongsberg and are due to be delivered in spring 2025. In addition to the 40% of carbon dioxide reductions achieved with the concept in previous ships, the wind assistance will further reduce emissions by 8%, Terntank said. With methanol’s low-carbon and potential in decarbonisation, Terntank said the new ships will accelerate its pathway to net zero emissions. The vessels are built with 14 cargo tank seggregations making them able to transport biofuel feedstocks to refineries and load the finished products for transport.
