Stena’s new RoPax vessels building in China to be among the most fuel-efficient of their type

With a drive-through capacity of more than 3,000 lane metres and space to provide about 1,000 passengers with a full range of services, the 214.5m-long ships will continue Stena Line’s successful business model of a freight/passenger mix. However, the new ships will be 50% larger than standard RoPax vessel in service today.
Niclas Mårtensson, Stena Line CEO, commented: “Through standardisation and built-in flexibility, we are planning to secure a highly reliable ferry operation which will provide even better support to our customers and help them to grow. We foresee continued growth within ferry transportation and this is an important step in preparing our business for that growth.”
As things stand today, it is likely that the RoPax vessels will be deployed on the company’s Irish Sea services, the CEO said.

Construction of four RoPax vessels ordered by Stena Line at AVIC Weihai Shipyard in China has now begun and when the ships are commissioned during 2019 and 2020, they are likely to set new standards of fuel efficiency and low emissions. Stena holds options on a further four vessels.
