Stena orders two more E-Flexer ships

Energy efficiency and sustainability are key design features of the E-Flexer RoPax vessels

Gothenburg-based Stena Line has ordered two more E-Flexer RoPax vessels at Avic Weihai Shipyard in China.

The two new vessels, with capacity for 1,200 passengers, will be the seventh and eighth ships in the series and the company has agreed options on four more vessels.
The two latest ships, due for delivery in 2022, will be deployed in the ferry company’s own route network and will have a length of 240m, 25m more than earlier vessels in the series. They will have a capacity of 3,600 lane metres rather than 3,100 lane metres. Energy efficiency and sustainability are key features of the vessels’ design.
Niclas Mårtensson, Stena Line’s CEO, said: “We are very pleased to have ordered two additional E-Flexer vessels. We foresee increasing demand for freight capacity in northern Europe and our new vessels fit very well in matching anticipated market developments as we prepare ourselves for further expansion. At this stage we haven’t decided where within our route network these two vessels will be deployed and are currently evaluating several options.”
Altogether, eight E-Flexer vessels have now been ordered by the company at Avic Weihai Shipyard. The first one is to be deployed on the Holyhead to Dublin route, and the next two will operate on the Liverpool to Belfast service. The other three are to be chartered out to other ferry operators.
