Steel cut for second Global-class cruise ship

At the steel-cutting ceremony in Rostock

Genting Hong Kong’s chairman and CEO, Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, has officially begun the steel-cutting process as construction of the company’s second Global-class ship gets under way at MV Werften in Rostock-Warnemünde, Germany. The 208,000gt vessel will have a length of 342m, a width of 46m and capacity for up to 9,500 passengers and 2,200 crew. Genting claims the vast ship will be one of the world’s most technologically advanced cruise vessels.
Global 2, as it is temporarily named, is an identical sister ship to Global 1, which is due to enter service as the Global Dream in 2021. Both vessels will be aimed at the fast-growing cruise market in Asia and will be the first cruise ships capable of carrying more than 10,000 persons.
Production of the ship is being divided between MV Werften’s three existing yards. Thirty large sections will be built in Stralsund for final assembly in Wismar where a 125m-high crane is currently being installed on the outfitting quay. “We are delighted that our comprehensive investments at the three shipyard locations are bearing fruit and we can already celebrate today the first steel-cutting for another technologically advanced vessel for Dream Cruises,” said Tan Sri Lim during the ceremony.
