South Korea’s Techcross awarded USCG type approval
The ECS technology is based on a one-time treatment using full-flow direct electrolysis
The news, announced at last week’s Posidonia in Athens, means that seven system manufacturers have now received USCG type approval, and that the Techcross technology, Electro-CleenTM System (ECS), has been approved by both the IMO and the US regulatory authority. Approval from the US Coast Guard took more than seven months and follow two years of tests at Komeri’s test facilities in Geoje, supervised by the Korea Register of Shipping (KR) as the Independent Laboratory.
The ECS technology is based on a one-time treatment using full-flow direct electrolysis. Meanwhile a total residual oxidant remains, which degrades over time, remains active in ballast tanks after treatment, thereby preventing any regrowth during a ballast haul, the company claims. No further treatment is carried out during deballasting, but the treated ballast water must be neutralised before discharge to minimise the discharge of residuals.
