Silverstream Technologies is to provide air lubrication systems for six new LNG carriers under construction at China State Shipbuilding Corporation’s (CSSC) Jiangnan Shipyard for Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC Logistics & Services (L&S)). The 175,000m3 vessels are the first LNG carriers to be built at the shipyard and will also be among the first new LNG tankers to have air lubrication installations in China.

The Silverstream® System, which reduces hull resistance with a layer of bubbles across a ship’s flat bottom, is expected to generate fuel and emission savings of 5-10%. LNG carriers are strong candidates for the technology owing to their hull form and large flat bottom, the company said.

Silverstream’s founder and CEO, Noah Silberschmidt, commented: “We’re pleased to be able to announce this deal with CSSC Jiangnan Shipyard Co. Ltd for ADNOC Logistics & Services (L&S), which further cements our strong position within the LNG segment. Partnering with ADNOC Logistics & Services (L&S) to install our Silverstream System on these vessels will help to create a new benchmark for LNG carrier efficiency, and reinforces the maturity of our technology as a verified fuel and emissions reduction solution.

“We look forward to further collaboration with the CSSC Group of shipyards via our Shanghai office, to allow more owners access to the technology and ensure a smooth integration and commissioning process,” he added.
