A single-hold 7,280dwt short-sea cargo ship has been launched and named at Thecla Bodewes Shipyards in the Netherlands. Number six in a series of ten, the Vertom Lisa is the latest addition to the Vertom Group’s fleet. The Rhoon-based owner operates a fleet of more than a hundred vessels ranging size from 1,500dwt to 12,000dwt.

The Vertom Lisa, built to a Labrax design, has a range of features boosting sustainability. Its diesel-electric propulsion system, in combination with an advanced power management system, minimises energy losses, and cuts fuel burn and emissions. Furthermore, its installed power is considerable lower than similar ships with equal cargo capacity.

With a hold capacity of 329,700ft3, the 119m-long vessel’s hull has been optimised using computational fluid dynamics. The engine and four generators drive a fixed-pitch propeller to minimise energy losses and the Labrax-design vessels are already compliant with IMO regulations and ready for alternative fuels and sources of power in the future, the shipowner said.

The Vertom Group’s Captain Roderick Kamphuizen, the ship’s master, said: “With all the demands placed on ships today, the Labrax series is already a step ahead of what the future will bring. At the same time, the incredible fuel savings make it a clean ship. This not only saves us a lot in terms of emissions, but also in terms of operational costs.

“A newbuilding is always fun to sail on, but the Labrax 7280 is even more special than conventional vessels. It is new, it is modern, it is high-tech, it is a Dutch product that we are proud of, and in addition the ships sail very stable and fast in relation to the power used. It is a real positive story on all fronts,” he added.

Arjan de Jong, the shipping company’s CEO, commented: “With the launch of our sixth vessel in the Labrax series, we are proud to continue setting a benchmark for future-proof and sustainable maritime shipping. Building on these strengths, the latest vessel embodies our commitment to innovation efficiency and environmental responsibility. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our maritime partners for their collaboration and expertise. Together we are navigating towards a greener future.”
