The order was placed by Kiel port services company Schlepp- und Fährschifffahrt Kiel (SFK). The contract includes options for three repeat vessels and was awarded to the yard after a tender was issued. The new plug in hybrid ferry will be delivered in spring 2020. Some of the ferries currently used in the port are 35 years old and have diesel engines regarded as too environmentally unfriendly.
The new vessel, named Gaarden, will have electric engines powered by two generators or batteries. The vessel will be operated partly with electric power and then with the synthetic fuel GTL. Batteries will be loaded overnight at a shore station. The optioned vessels would be delivered in 2022, 2024 und 2026. SFK is also considering other river ferry and tug newbuildings.

Dutch yard Holland Shipyards has an order worth 3.9 million euros for the first of a series of new ferries for operation in the port of Kiel in Germany.
