MAN Energy Solutions’ compact 175D SCR (selective catalytic reduction) system has completed type approval tests and has been awarded IMO Tier III certification by all major classification societies, the company has announced.

The sign-off follows more than 5,000 hours of tests at both MAN’s Frederikshavn facility and on board a working offshore support vessel.
“In order to deliver a very compact and cost-effective design, we have based the MAN 175D SCR system on our most cutting-edge technology,” said Daniel Struckmeier, the company’s head of Exhaust Aftertreatment. “A great strength is its flexible arrangement and compactness that optimise the space typically available in confined engine rooms.”
The type approval covers all engines in the 175D range. Although the tests have been completed on the 12V175D engine, other units in the engine family, including the 16V and 20V versions that use identical components and are due to be launched in the near future, will also be covered by the IMO Tier III certification.
