German propulsion specialist, Schottel, has launched a retractable version of its electrically-powered Schottel Rim Thruster (SRT). Available in a power range up to 500 kW, the SRT-R can provide thrust through 360° and provide dynamic positioning operation. Its quiet operation and low emissions make the unit particularly suitable for passenger vessels, the company said.

The retractable version is also available in an RT variant which, in its retracted position, can function as a transverse thruster. Providing even more manoeuvrability, applications extend from docking and casting-off manoeuvres in harbours to continuous operation in dynamic positioning mode.

The thruster is designed with the electric motor stator in the outer part of the tunnel with the propeller blades attached to the inside of the rotor. This space-saving arrangement contributes to low weight and easy maintenance. Available with an option to use biodegradable oils, Schottel’s rim thrusters are suitable both for newbuilds and existing vessels.
