Schottel to supply propulsion systems for fish carriers

The design for the LFCs comes from Norway’s Salt Ship Design (Source: Schottel)

The Turkish shipyard Sefine recently delivered Aqua Skilsøy, the third of six live fish carriers (LFC), to DESS Aquaculture Shipping AS in Grimstad, Norway. All six live fish carriers, each with a live fish hold capacity of 3,900m³, will be assigned to long-term contracts for Mowi ASA, a leading seafood company from Norway.

The 84.4m-long and 16m-wide LFCs are each powered by an advanced diesel-electric propulsion system from Schottel, a German manufacturer of steerable propulsion systems for ships and offshore applications. It consists of two Rudderpropellers type SRP 360 FP (1,400 kW each) with a diameter of 2.2m and two Transverse Thrusters type STT 1 CP (400 kW each). This combination provides optimised propulsion efficiency and improved manoeuvrability, Schottel said.

The vessels are equipped with the patented, DNV-GL type-approved Leacon sealing system. By means of separate seals on both the seawater and gearbox sides, the sealing system ensures that, in the event of leakage, any seawater entering the system or any gear oil escaping from the system is collected in an intermediate chamber.

Furthermore, all ships have an automated cleaning system as well as an ozone disinfection system and are equipped for reverse osmosis and mechanical treatment. The newbuilding series is due to be finalised by April 2021.
