A new tug, under construction at China’s Tongfang Jiangxin Shipbuilding for the Taizhou Maritime Safety Administration, is to have Schottel Rudderpropellers and high-performance nozzles.

The 45m-long vessel, which will be used for a range of functions including towing, vessel rescue, pollution prevention and firefighting, will have two four-bladed, controllable pitch Rudderpropellers type SRP 430 with a diameter of 2.4m. Each thruster will be driven by a 1,920-kW diesel engine, providing a bollard pull of 60 tonnes and a free running speed of about 13 knots. Schottel VarioDuct SDV45 nozzles will aid performance.

The shipyard’s assistant general manager, Hou Wei, commented: “Taizhou is an area where a lot of small fishing vessels operate, often facing typhoons. We opted for azimuth thrusters from Schottel because of their strong position in the market and traceable record of high product quality as well as service availability.”
