The 2,750-passenger Scarlet Lady, Virgin Voyages’ first cruise ship to enter service, has left shipbuilder Fincantieri in Genoa and is now sailing for its home port of Miami.

The 278m-long vessel is due to embark on its maiden voyage from there on April 20th. The ship is the first of four sisters to be constructed by the Italian builder for Virgin Voyages, a newcomer to the buoyant cruise sector. The cruise line is targeting the adult market, with a minimum age restriction of 18. The Scarlet Lady is powered by two ABB Azipods of 16 MW each and will use waste heat from the engines to generate electricity and reduce fuel consumption.

Virgin Voyages is offsetting its direct climate change emissions by purchasing carbon offsets, a move which it claims will make it the first cruise line to become carbon-neutral for its direct emissions footprint from the first day of commercial operation.
