SAL Heavy Lift orders electric cranes from Liebherr

Hamburg-based SAL Heavy Lift has ordered eight electric heavy-lift cranes for four Orca-class newbuildings from Liebherr. Each vessel will have two LS 800 E cranes with a maximum lifting capacity of 800 tonnes and a radius of 39m, but which can lift weights of up to 1600 tonnes when working in tandem.

Part of the Harren Group, SAL Heavy Lift has worked closely with Liebherr for many years. But this project marks the beginning of a new phase, the companies said, with the crane manufacturer actively involved in development of the multipurpose heavy-lift ships from the start.

The heavy-lift carriers of the newbuilding programme were developed in close cooperation with SAL’s joint venture partner, Jumbo Shipping, Schiedam, the Netherlands.

Described by Gregor Levold, general sales manager for Liebherr Offshore, Ship and Port Cranes, as the most advanced ship crane in the segment, their design has focused on meeting today’s heavier and larger project cargo operations, as well as long-term reliability and longevity. But the companies have also concentrated on effective ship-crane integration.

The all-electric cranes will save energy and cut emissions and are designed to communicate directly with the ships’ power management systems, enabling optimal vessel energy utilisation. Recovered energy will be fed back into the ships’ energy systems and stored for use when consumption rises again. The power electronics of the drive systems will be installed inside the cranes, enabling space below deck to be used for other purposes.
