Belgian dredging company DEME said it has placed an order with Dutch yard Royal IHC for one of the world’s most powerful cutter suction dredgers (CSD).

The 164m-long vessel, named Spartacus, will be environmentally friendly with liquefied natural gas (LNG) power. With a total installed capacity of 44,180 kW, the powerful vessel will be able to cut harder soils at speeds that have not been possible before. This means that works can be taken on by the cutter dredger rather than relying on the use of dynamite and blasting. Spartacus will be able to dredge in waters of up to 45m depth, compared to the 35m depth which is presently the general upper limit in the market and the dredger is capable of operating in very remote locations with limited infrastructure, given her fuel autonomy and accommodation capacity. It will be delivered in the summer of 2019.
