Two new 95m-long rescue vessels, under construction at German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen for the German Federal Waterway and Shipping Administration, are to have gas-electric propulsion system based on medium-speed Bergen B36:45L6AG engines from Rolls-Royce, each delivering 3,600 kW.

The two ships will be deployed in the North and Baltic seas to tackle fires, deal with accidents or manage vessels which have lost power. They will replace the Scharhörn and the Mellum which have been in service for 46 years and 36 years respectively.

Rolls-Royce will also provide a gas shield protection system allowing the engines to operate in dangerous conditions where ambient air has been contaminated with explosive gases following a gas tanker accident, for example.

In addition to these two vessels which are due for delivery in 2023 and 2024, an option on a third identical vessel must be declared by the end of this year.
