A Skipsteknisk-designed Arctic trawler under construction at Astilleros Balenciaga SA in Spain for the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources is to have a complete propulsion package supplied by MAN Energy Solutions.
The package will include MAN 27/38 and 175D engines, a five-bladed propeller, gensets, a remote-control system and a MAN HyProp ECO flexible propulsion system which, the company claims, can yield fuel savings of 10% to15%. The entire package will be supplied during the first quarter of 2020, and the vessel is due for delivery about a year later.
The 61m-long, ice-class Arctic trawler will include research and laboratory facilities, with accommodation for 32 persons. It is one of 18 Skipsteknisk-designed fishing vessels currently under construction for which MAN is providing propulsion equipment.
The engine maker’s head of Four-Stroke Marine Sales, Lex Nijsen, commented: “This marks the first time that we have sold an MAN 175D unit to a research vessel, yet another market niche that it capably fills and testament to how versatile a performer this engine is. That it forms part of a complete propulsion package with our 27/38 engine and other MAN equipment is most welcome, and sits well with our intention to increasingly become a supplier of complete propulsion solutions.” The vessel will have DNV GL SILENT notation, reflecting a design focus on noise minimisation.
