Cespa said it is in talks with a shortlist of Spanish and foreign yards to build the vessel. The award of a construction contract is expected in one to two months, Cespa said. The project is part of the “Core LNGas Hive” initiative undertaken by the European Union Commission. Cepsa said the new supply barge will be able to provide all types of marine fuels, from traditional fuels such as heating oil and diesel, through to the innovative fuels like LNG. Cepsa will participate in the design and construction of the ship alongside its strategic business partner, Flota Suardiaz. The aim of the EU’s “Core LNGas Hive” is to develop an LNG supply network to promote the use of the gas as a fuel for transport, especially in shipping to improve the environment. The project in Spain is led by the country’s ports and coordinated by Enagas and has 42 partners in Spain and Portugal, among them Cepsa. The first barge will start operations in 2018 from the port of Barcelona.

Spanish energy company Cepsa has signed an agreement with Spanish shipping company Flota Suardiaz to build a new type of multi-product barge to supply ships with both conventional fuel and with liquefied natural gas (LNG).
