New tug design presented

One of the firstly delivered ASD 3212 tugs

The Lloyd´s Register-classed design has an overall length of 32.7m, a breadth of 12.82m and a draught of 5.6m. Two Caterpillar 3516C HD+TA/D engines with a total power of 5,050 kW provide power for a maximum speed of 14 knots and a maximum bollard pull of 85 tonnes.
According to Damen, the ASD Tug 3212 is designed to operate in all conditions. It has a hull form with a high bow for a better speed even in bigger waves. A more pronounced v-shape in the fore ship and more slender water lines in the bow section are said to improve the seakeeping and towing capabilities. The design also includes a low wheelhouse and slope frames as well as bilge keels. Other features are super-absorbent fenders and a new hydraulically driven double drum render and recovery winch rendering 100 tonnes at 100 m/min at second layer and recovering 60 tonnes at 50 m/min at second layer.
The Tug 3212 has a capacity for a maximum crew of 10 persons and it is built to comply with all of the latest IMO and MLC 2006 crew and comfort regulations. Noise and vibrations are said to be kept to a minimum due to flexibly mounted main engines and flexible drive couplings. Four of the new type ASD 3212 tugs have been already delivered to clients in Australia, Colombia and the Netherlands, ten more are currently under construction.

Damen Shipyards launched its newly designed ASD Tug 3212 during this year’s International Tug and Salvage Convention (ITS) in Barcelona, Spain.
