New Lloyd's Register Educational Trust Professor

Prof Choo Yoo Sang

He takes the reins from Prof Peter Marshall, formerly from Shell and University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England.

The Lloyd's Register Educational Trust Chair Professorship was established at CORE with the help of a donation by the Lloyd's Register Educational Trust (LRET) following a Gift Agreement signed in 2005. LRET is an independent charity registered in the UK supporting advances in transportation, science, engineering and technology education, training and research worldwide for the benefit of all. The Professorship aims to further boost the growth of maritime research and development in Singapore, in particular, offshore research. The Professorship is a significant move towards the nation's efforts to create a dynamic maritime R&D cluster. It was the first time that the LRET had set up a professorship outside the UK, demonstrating the organisation's confidence in Singapore's commitment to develop the country's offshore and maritime industry.

A founding director of CORE, Prof Choo is immediate Past President of the Institute of Marine Engineering Science & Technology (IMarEST), and was its first President from the Far East. IMarEST is the leading membership body and learned society for marine professionals, industry, research and education. He has also been invited to serve in many scientific and technical committees for international organisations, conferences and journals. His leadership roles have included that of the President of the Singapore Structural Steel Society, as well as a member of the Board of Directors, International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).Prof Choo, a faculty member with the Department of Civil Engineering, NUS, helms its Offshore Engineering Programme. He has been a Visiting Professor to Delft University of Technology since 2000 and has served as the Chairman for the joint Branch of The Royal Institution of Naval Architects and IMarEST in Singapore.
