New branding for Damen’s jv yard in the UAE
Damen Shipyards Sharjah is now called Albwardy Damen
The new set-up will continue to offer newbuilding and repair services from the Sharjah shipyard, built from scratch on coastal land and commissioned in 2014, as well as repair facilities in Al Jadaf, Dubai, and repair and diving services in Fujairah. Afloat repairs are available throughout the United Arab Emirates and certified riding squads can be deployed worldwide.
Albwardy Damen will be expanding its Dubai facilities this year with the construction of a new office and workshop facility in Dubai Maritime City. The new unit will enable the company to offer a full range of repair services to an expanding customer base in Dubai’s ship service hub, complementing repair activities in its nearby Al Jadaf facility.
Commenting on the re-branding, Lars Seistrup, managing director of Albwardy Damen, said the move was a logical step. “We aim to be the best regional shipyard for building and repairing niche tonnage,” he said, “and with our expansion in Dubai we are positioning ourselves in the best possible way to serve our clients in the region during these challenging times.”
Albwardy Marine Engineering is owned by Albwardy Investment, the holding company of a widely diversified group with interests including retail and logistics, hotels, insurance and offshore and marine engineering. The joint venture with Damen, originally established in 2008, was formed to design and oversee construction of the new shipyard. Sited in Sharjah Hamriyah Freezone, the facilty benefits from unrestricted access to the sea and has facilities including a 120m shiplift, 1,000m of quay and 8m of water alongside.
