A new antivirus coating to prevent people picking up viruses from painted surfaces has been developed by Nippon Paint and Corning Inc, a United States technology company. The coating contains Corning GuardiantTM Antimicrobial Particles, a technology developed to safeguard against viruses adhering to surfaces in health centres and hospitals.

Although Nippon Paint’s Antivirus Kids Paint has been developed to protect frontline staff in the health sector, its application could well be extended for possible use on cruise ships, ferries and other merchant vessels. The coating was tested in January at the Microchem Laboratory in Texas and found to have highly effective antiviral and anti-bacterial properties.
