Meyer Werft could win a vital construction contract for a residential yacht, Njord, with capacity for 1,000 passengers and crew and a delivery date at the end of 2025. The 289.3m-long vessel is to be built for Ocean Residences Development Ltd but is still subject to financing.

The 84,800gt ship will have a hybrid setup with batteries and LNG propulsion capable of conversion to other potential fuels in the future. It will have a speed of 21 knots.

Unlike conventional cruise vessels, accommodation on board will be available for clients to buy. In a statement, Meyer Werft said that the ship would become home to a community of individuals and families who share a passion for travel, adventure and discovery – across oceans, under water, in the air and on land.

The ship will also be capable of undertaking scientific and oceanographic research, supporting charities, missions and research projects.

“This order is urgently needed to ensure that the decline in capacity utilisation will not be even greater than 40% in these years,” declared Thomas Weigend, managing director of Meyer Werft. “Many different measures and new orders are absolutely necessary for the company’s programme for the future. With the new order, we are expanding our portfolio of ship types and can thus also improve the previously difficult prospects, especially for the years 2024/2025.
