Six MAN 12V32/44CR main engines are to be installed on Jan de Nul’s latest offshore installation crane vessel currently under construction at China Merchants Heavy Industry and already named Les Alizés.

Providing total power of 43,200 kW, the engines will have a MAN-supplied selective catalytic reduction system to ensure both IMO Tier III and even stricter Euro Stage V NOx emission compliance. Meeting the second of these emission standards means that the vessel will fulfil the requirements for an ultra low emission vessel, a key requirement of the Belgian-based marine engineering and construction company.

The engines have a number of distinctive features and MAN identified one, in particular, that helped it win the order. The engines will be supplied with the ECOMAP feature which allows them to be programmed to run on different fuel consumption versus power characteristics, with each one having its efficiency optimum at a different load point.

With a lifting capacity of 5,000 tonnes, the super-sized vessel will be in a class of its own, capable not only of installing the huge components required for construction of latest generation wind farms, but also the decommissioning of offshore oil and gas platforms.
