MAN Diesel & Turbo introduces new high-speed engine

The twelve-cylinder MAN 12V175D, developed especially for use in the shipping industry, is part of an  initiative aimed at providing MAN customers with a product portfolio that covers every power requirement, from high to low speed, the manufacturer said.
"With the MAN 175D, we are supplementing and completing MAN Diesel & Turbo's and MAN Truck & Bus's product portfolio in the maritime sector," said Hans-Otto Jeske, chief technology officer and acting CEO of MAN Diesel & Turbo. The new engine will be offered with an output spectrum from 1,500 to 2,200 kW and will be available to the first pilot customers starting in 2015.
The twelve-cylinder version of the MAN 175D is designed to precisely fit the needs of commercial shipping and is optimised for propelling ferries, offshore supply vessels, tugboats and working vessels, MAN said. Other central areas of application such as the markets for superyachts and marine applications are served by additional specific versions.
The MAN 175D’s compact and modular exhaust gas after-treatment system uses the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) method and is based on MAN Ad Blue® technology. The engine will therefore satisfy the strict environmental standards of  IMO Tier III, the company said. Customer focus was also at the forefront of the overall development process, said Florian Keiler, responsible for the business development and market launch of the MAN 175D. "Throughout the development stage, we spoke to a number of customers across the whole world to get a detailed picture of their expectations and professional requirements. This feedback has been pumped directly into the development process."
