MAN 175D wins first orders

Each of the IMO Tier II/III-compliant vessels, known in Italian as "pattugliatore polivalente d' altura" (PPA), will have four 12V175D gensets delivering 1,640 kW apiece. The newbuildings have been ordered as part of the Italian navy’s fleet renewal, a major project that also features other vessels with MAN technology.
Lex Nijsen, head of Germany-based MAN Diesel & Turbo's four-stroke marine unit, said: “We already have several 175D test installations in operation, but this is really the breakthrough for the engine. Its excellent performance data and fuel consumption figures have created huge interest in the market, and we’re looking forward to following its development.”
MAN Diesel & Turbo says the new gensets were chosen for their highly reliable and fuel-efficient design, which meets the multiple scenarios and demands that patrol vessels encounter.
The Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri will build the ships in Italy. Delivery of the first vessel is scheduled for 2021, with subsequent deliveries in 2022, 2023, 2024 (two units) 2025 and 2026.
The PPAs are highly flexible vessels with the capacity to serve multiple roles, ranging from patrolling with sea-rescue capabilities, to civil protection and – in its most highly equipped version – as front-line fighting vessels, MAN Diesel & Turbo says.
Each PPA is 133m long, has a top speed of over 32 knots and can accommodate a crew of up to 180. The MAN 175D gensets will, on account of the demanding operating conditions, feature double-elastic mounting and, in the aft machinery room only, sound enclosures. In addition to the engines and their related plant equipment, MAN Diesel & Turbo says it will supply, in the aft machinery room only, its in-house-designed selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to ensure an environmentally friendly footprint.

MAN Diesel & Turbo says it has won a contract to supply the first shipset (plus an option for six more; to be confirmed) of gensets for the Italian navy's multi-purpose, offshore patrol vessel programme.
