Lürssen takes over Blohm+Voss

With the acquisition of Blohm+Voss, Lürssen says it is entering into a long-term relationship to strengthen its portfolio in the repair and refit activities for yachts, naval and commercial ships as well as enhancing its naval new build activities.

Lürssen is mainly involved in building mega-yachts and naval vessels. While Blohm + Voss is expected to continue building naval ships, the construction of yachts at the Hamburg yard will depend on the overall market situation, Lürssen said. The takeover means Lürssen will have six yards with around 2,800 personnel. Star Capital Partners had bought Blohm + Voss in December 2011 from German group ThyssenKrupp. Blohm + Voss employs about 1,000 people and its trade unions said they believed the yard will continue to operate as an independent company. The takeover is still subject to approval from German authorities.

The Bremen-based shipbuilding group Lürssen has taken over Hamburg-based Blohm+Voss from the British private equity investor Star Capital Partners.
