The 213,370-tonne Coral South FLNG, to be built at Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea, will be the world’s first ultra-deepwater unit operating in a water depth of 2,000m. The 430m-long offshore plant will produce about 3.4m tonnes of LNG each year and have a design life of 25 years. Coral South, with about 450 billion cubic metres of gas, is a massive field that is expected to transform Mozambique’s economy.
The classification society’s scope of work includes design, procurement, certification, construction, integration and commissioning, as well as providing classification services under a risk-based inspection regime. On completion, the FLNG will be towed from the shipyard to Mozambique where LR will oversee hook-up of the mooring system and commissioning of the topsides on station.
LR has been involved in the project since 2014 and will now be certifying all of the equipment, systems and machinery that make up the topsides plant. The society will be holding more than 500 contracts with equipment suppliers and delivering services in all vendor locations, resulting in all of the components arriving in South Korea already certified by LR to agreed codes and standards.
