A 40,000m3 liquid CO2 (LCO2) carrier design developed by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has been awarded design approval by Lloyd’s Register (LR). The 239m-long vessel will be the largest in its class.

The tanker will have seven IMO Type C cargo tanks constructed to a new design enabling lighter scantlings for the same strength. LR will provide advice and guidance on this arrangement which, ultimately, will enable the vessel to carry more cargo.

LR’s Andy McKeran, CCO, commented: “The design approval for this vessel underlines LR’s credentials in supporting global LCO2 transportation. This carrier will be a key piece of infrastructure in the carbon capture and storage value chain, helping the maritime industry drive forward its energy efficiency and decarbonisation ambitions.”

Senior executive vice president of HHI, Won-Ho Joo, said: “We believe our self-developed LCO2 carrier will contribute to the global decarbonisation effort and provide tailormade LCO2 carrier design according to each shipowner’s specific requirements based on this approved design.”
