LR announces new notations for WAPS and ergonomics
Lloyd’s Register (LR) has introduced two new notations for wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS) and another notation for ergonomic access and human-centric design. The new notations are designed to support the maritime industry’s transition to cleaner propulsion technologies and improved safety on board ships.
The WAPS and WAPS* notations have been designed for systems such as wing sails, Flettner rotors, suction wings, and kites. They will enable shipowners to classify retrofitted or hybrid installations, including those not originally classed by LR. The notations are designed to support investment decisions and operational assurance across a broad range of ship types, LR said.
The classification society’s existing RIGGING notation definition, which applies to vessels relying solely on wind propulsion, have also been updated. They establish classification requirements for systems including those for aft-rigged vessels, DynaRig, AeroRig, and traditional square-rigged vessels.
Meanwhile, LR has also introduced the EASE notation, which establishes formalised standards for ergonomic access and human-centric design. The objective is to enable shipowners to demonstrate their commitment to crew welfare through certified layouts and sound ergonomic standards in critical areas, including bridges and machinery spaces.
The classification society’s Senior Structures Specialist, Rule Development, Yikun Wang, said: “These updates are a direct response to the industry’s need for clarity and confidence when investing in emerging technologies. By codifying standards for wind propulsion and ergonomics, we’re helping shipowners future-proof their fleets while supporting decarbonisation and safety goals.”
The new notations will be consolidated into LR’s Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Ships from January 1st 2026.
