Low-speed two-stroke engines for smaller vessels

Testing of the engine took place at Wärtsilä's licensee Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea

Wärtsilä, provider of marine solutions and services, said it had tested the new Wärtsilä RT-flex50 version D engine with the turbocharger installed on the driving end side.

Developed especially for smaller vessel types with slim stern sections like small bulkers and tanker vessels, handysize and container vessels or feeder ships, the engine runs on lower rpms with reduced fuel consumption. According to Wärtsilä, the RT-flex50 can be operated with a full electronic control of the exhaust valve activation and fuel injection. It is also designed to operate on a wide range of fuels including marine diesel oil (MDO) and heavy fuel oil (HFO) of different qualities.
