Louis Dreyfus Armateurs is collaborating with ship design firm, Deltamarin, and Chinese shipbuilder, Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group Co. Ltd., in developing a specification for three eco-friendly RoRo vessels. The ships are being built to ship Airbus aeroplane components across the Atlantic from production facilities in Europe to the United States.

Deltamarin, a Finnish ship design firm owned by China Merchants Group, is focusing on the ships’ environmental performance as part of Airbus’ drive to modernise its fleet of chartered ships and reduce emissions. The aircraft company is targeting a 50% cut in carbon emissions by 2030 compared with 2023 levels.

The ships will have six Flettner rotor wind sails and two dual-fuel engines operating on green methanol or marine diesel. They are expected to reduce average annual transatlantic CO2 emissions from 68,000 to 33,000 tonnes by the end of the decade, the company said. Each vessel will have capacity for about 70 forty-foot containers and six single-aisle aircraft subassembly sets.

The RoRos will be built, owned, and operated by the Louis Dreyfus Armateurs and are expected to be commissioned in 2026
