A 2,400TEU container RoRo ship, El Coqui, powered by liquid natural gas (LNG), has been delivered by VT Halter Marine Inc for operation on Crowley Maritime’s scheduled service between Jacksonville, Florida, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The El Coqui is the first of two Commitment-class sister ships to be deployed in the Jones Act trade and is one of the world’s first ConRo vessels to be fueled by LNG.

In addition to 2,400 twenty-foot containers, the El Coqui and its sister Taino will have capacity to ship nearly 400 cars and larger vehicles on weather-tight RoRo decks. The 219.5m-long vessels, which also have capacity for 300 reefer containers, have a beam of 32.3m and a deadweight of 26,500 tonnes.
VT Halter Marine, a company within the Vision Technologies Systems Inc group, is based in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
