Liebherr is supplying seven CBG 360-type grab cranes to service two Oldendorff-owned bulk carriers in North Vietnam and a third vessel in West Africa.

Four cranes have been installed on 10m-long platforms to transship coal from two 18,000dwt self-loading and self-unloading bulk carriers supplying the new Nghi Son 2 power plant in Thanh Hoa province, Vietnam. Over a 25-year period, the energy facility will consume 100 million tonnes of Indonesian coal.

The Oldendorff vessels transfer coal from Capesize bulk carriers at the anchorage to the power station jetty. The first vessel, Calypso, began its deployment at the start of the year.

Three more CBG 360 cranes have been provided for the 90,340dwt Albert Oldendorff, deployed in the transhipment of bauxite from river barges in Guyana, West Africa, to ocean-going bulk carriers. The vessel is equipped with hoppers and a conveyor system and the side-mounted cranes discharge directly into the hopper conveyor belt system.

Liebherr senior sales manager, Jan Breckling, commented: “The CBG is a heavy-duty crane designed for continuous operation. The new equipment will therefore play a crucial and at the same time permanent role in our customer’s long-term transhipment project.”
