Legacy of the Fjords to make Oslo debut in July 2019
Sister vessel Future of the Fjords was delivered earlier this year
But this time, the company – jointly owned by tourist body Flåm AS and ferry company Fjord1 – will introduce the vessel to the busy waters around Norway’s capital, Oslo.
Already, the first two flagships of the fleet, Vision and Future, built to shipbuilder Brødene Aa’s distinctive ‘Seasight’ design, carry passengers in almost total silence through some of the most unforgettable scenery between Flåm and Gudvangen in the UNESCO World Heritage listed Nærøyfjord. Now, The Fjords CEO, Rolf Sandvik, believes that urban folk and visitors to the country’s capital should experience zero-emission voyages on the passenger vessels of tomorrow.
“Oslo is very different from Flåm, but we believe it should demand the same degree of operational responsibility and environmental care – especially seeing as it is EU Green Capital of the Year 2019. We want to set new standards for the urban environment, as we have done for the natural one, and the silent running, highly efficient, zero-emission Legacy of the Fjords will allow us to do so.”
The 42m-long vessel will have capacity for 400 passengers, two 450-kW electric motors, an 1,800 kWh battery pack and a controllable pitch propeller. The owners of Legacy of the Fjords will receive financial support from state-run organisations Enova and the NOx Fund, both of which provide incentives for ship operators to adopt low emission technologies.
