Launch ceremony

The launch of the “Artemis”

IHC Merwede recently named and launched a self-propelled cutter suction dredger at its shipyard in Sliedrecht, the Netherlands. IHC Dredgers, part of IHC Merwede, signed the contract for the design, construction and delivery of the vessel with Van Oord.

The “Artemis” is 131.5m long and 27.8m wide with a total installed power of 24,650kW. According to IHC, the vessel’s maximum dredging depth is about 25.8m (50°) / 32.4m (60°) and the suction pipe diameter is 1,000mm. A particular feature of the vessel is a spud carriage with hydraulic buffering, which makes it possible to work for longer periods in bad weather. Much attention has been paid to the ergonomic design of the “Artemis”. For example the deckhouse will be mounted on air springs to minimise noise and vibrations in the accommodation section.
The delivery of the newbuilding, which is said to be one of the largest cutter suction dredgers ever built in the Netherlands for a Dutch dredging company, is scheduled for the first half of 2013.
