Kotug signs agreement on pusher tugs

Rotterdam-based Kotug International B.V. has signed a framework agreement with compatriot marine engineering company, Padmos, for the construction of a complete range of E-Pusher tugs. The S, M, and L pusher tugs range from 9 to 22m in length and have depths of between 0.85m and 1.35m, 30% less than conventional pusher tug designs.

The new agreement follows the successful deployment of the E-Pusher 1 (Model). Commissioned last June, the vessel has been operating on waterways in the north of the Netherlands for Cargill, transporting cocoa beans from Amsterdam to Zaandam. The fully electric tug, with barges, is estimated to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 190 tonnes a year, equivalent to 15,000 single truck trips of the same distance.

The vessels work on a system of swappable energy containers. These can contain European Stage V diesel, biogas, hydrogen, or batteries. Stage V diesel is the least polluting type of diesel fuel available, and Stage V engines typically provide 30% higher power density and torque, and significantly lower emissions.

Ard-Jan Kooren, Kotug International president and CEO, said: “Our collaboration with Padmos marks a significant stride towards advancing sustainable maritime practices. The E-Pusher series underscores our commitment to innovation, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.”

Speaking for Padmos, Leon Padmos commented: “We are proud to build upon our cooperation with Kotug in pioneering the construction of the E-Pusher lineup. Our shared vision for sustainable maritime solutions drives this partnership, and we are excited about the transformative impact these vessels will have on the industry.”
