The nine-ship contract, worth more than NOK 400 million, will cover the supply of large battery systems, shaft generators, frequency converters and energy management systems, with equipment delivery from mid-2019 until 2022.
The first of the nine confirmed RoRo vessels will be delivered in 2020. Like its sisters, the 64,000gt ship will be 238m long, with a beam of 34m, and capacity to transport more than 7,800 lane metres of rolling units, equivalent to about 500 trailers. If confirmed, the three smaller option vessels, worth at least another NOK 100 million, will have a capacity of 5,800 lane metres.
Commenting on the contract, Kongsberg Maritime’s executive VP, Global Sales & Marketing, said: “This delivery represents the introduction of new technology into this market segment. The vessels will have zero emissions while in port and reduced overall fuel consumption by utilising our peak shaving technology, while the batteries will be charged at sea by using the shaft generators.”
Kongsberg will use resources both in Norway and China to fulfil the contract.

Norway’s Kongsberg is to supply power and hybrid systems for nine new RoRo vessels, with three options, ordered by the Italian Grimaldi Group at Nanjing Jinling Shipyard in China.
