Kongsberg targets cruise, ferry, RoRo and container ship sectors with new thruster range
Kongsberg Maritime has launched a new series of tunnel thrusters which, it claims, will be particularly suitable for cruise ships, ferries, RoRo vessels and container ships. Designed with ease of installation, maintenance and cost as priorities, the Tunnel Thruster Commercial (TTC) range is a modular system based on standard components which should reduce installation and commissioning time by 20-30%, as well as lowering capital and operating costs, the company said.
Commenting on the new TTC range, Kongsberg’s executive vice president Global Sales and Marketing, Bård Bjørløw, said: “For more than 40 years, we have focused our thruster development on the offshore vessel market. This sector typically requires a robust thruster with high performance and dynamic positioning (DP) capability.
“However these thrusters are high-end, high-value products that do not correspond well with merchant market requirements. Since commercial vessels rarely require DP functionality and only operate their thrusters for a limited period, we have able to standardise the system, reduce components and optimise installation.”
